Taste of Greece History

The building fund of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke was helped along in the late 1970’s when parishioners got together and held annual Greek Festivals on the grounds of the Wilbraham Monson Academy. The proceeds from these festivals allowed the parish to begin the building of the church that now stands on 400 Prospect Street.

Eventually as all things do, these festivals came to an end with other fund-raisers taking their place. However, when the church, as it stands, needed renovations, the idea to have a “Taste of Greece” was born. Due to confines of our Fellowship Hall, this event was labeled a “Taste” rather than a festival. It became a unique blend of the former Grecian festivals of the 70’s and the Holiday Bazaars that followed.

The hallmark of the annual ‘Taste of Greece” is a peek into the heritage, culture and traditions of the Greek culture. The main focus is the sale of freshly prepared food and pastries, which have made their mark and continue to draw people back year after year.  Take a peek at our Menu tab above for some of the delectable treats you may find at The Taste.

Other attractions that enhance the 3-day event are the Music, Dancing and the Agora [Gift Shop]. Upon inception of the event, one of the goals of the committee was to foster unity, participation and camaraderie amongst the parishioners. It was a team building type of event that would only reach its goal through the efforts of many. And, that it did! As the saying goes “good things come in small packages”…the quality and consistency of the products and services have encouraged people to return year after year.

In the end, our parish has received financial support form this one event that has uplifted it through times - good and bad.
