2010-2011 Sunday School
Many of our manuals for Sunday school come from the Orthodox Christian Education Commission (OCEC). They realize not all churches have enough children to allow for separate grades in the church school. Some grades are combined together in the same classroom. This open classroom concept is not new and has been developed in the public schools for years. According to the OCEC, it helps to think of small schools as a small family living and learning about God together.
The OCEC believes a basic lesson should be taught to the whole group, and then the children are divided up according to age, and work abilities. The older students will need more challenge to understand and study the concepts on their own level and at their own speed. The younger students will be given more teacher guidance and involvement.
With that philosophy in mind, the St. Luke Sunday School classes for 2010-2011 have the following combined classes:

Manual: God Loves Us
Love is the basis for this program! This beautiful program is customized for this age group. The children will explore God’s love of family, the seasons, the earth, and the church.
K & 1st Grade

Curriculum: 1st Grade
Manual: Me and My World
This program focuses on the Creation as God’s gift. By discovering the world the child will understand that we all come from God. God’s world will be depicted in the child’s daily life and he/she will come to realize that God is real, loving, and caring.

Curriculum: 3rd Grade
Manual: New Life in the Church
This program develops the child’s awareness that the New Life received from Christ, through the Sacraments (Baptism, Chrismation, Confession and the Eucharist), is shared with others within the Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
4th and 5th Grade

Manual: Jesus, The Promise of God and Finding Your Way Through the Bible
This program teaches the study of the Bible and the events and teachings in the life of Christ. There is also a self-instruction book that will help the student become familiar with the Bible, how it is divided and how to look up passages.
6th and 7th Grade

Curriculum: 6th Grade
Manual: In the Beginning
This year 6th graders will be learning about the Old Testament: its people, places, main events and literature. Students will use maps, photographs, illustrations, Biblical quotations and various activities and worksheets to explore the Old Testament.
